Gus White

November 15, 1923 - February 10, 2011

Funeral Services for Gus White Jr., 87 of Lamesa will be held on Saturday February 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lamesa with Bro. Clifton Igo officiating. Burial will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Friday February 11, 2011 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home.

Gus passed away on Thursday February 10, 2011 in Lamesa. He was born on November 15, 1923 in Lamesa to Willie (Garret) and Gus White Sr. He married Helen Barron on June 15, 1945 in Lamesa. They were married for 52 years. She preceded him in death on January 24, 1998. He married Shug Addison in October of 1998 in Lamesa. Gus graduated from Lamesa High School and attended college at Texas A&M University where he played football. He then played football at the San Diego Naval Training Center where he was given the nickname "Galloping Goose". Gus held the record for the longest kick-off return in Los Angeles Coliseum. He was also a world class polo player and was ranked as an eight goal player. He played in the United States, Mexico, Argentina, and the Dominican Republic, and Madison Square Garden. He loved to play golf. Gus served in the United States Navy and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was known as "Papa Goose" by those that loved him dearly.

Gus is survived by his wife, Shug Addison White of Lamesa; son, Jay White and wife, Donna of Lamesa; grandchildren, Justin White and wife, Melissa of Wiley, and J.J. Stokes and husband, Casey of Lubbock; great-grandchildren, Lennon, Bailey, Madison, and Mason all of Wiley, and Cason of Lubbock.

He is also preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Gus White Sr.; and sisters, Helen Tyra, Biddy Borland, and Nita Gross.
