Eusebio Gonzales

August 19, 1932 - October 25, 2018

Eusebio "Chebby" Renteria Gonzales, 86, passed away on October 25, 2018 surrounded by family. He was born in Seguin, Texas on August 19, 1932 to Eusebio B. Gonzales and Maria R. Gonzales. When Chebby was 16 years old, he went to work as a rock crusher to help support his parents as their health declined. Then, during his high school years in Knox City and O'Brien, TX he led both high schools to many shut outs and held records as a pitcher. Every game he played in was filled with excitement and anticipation. Whenever he played, it drew in many crowds from the time he was a young player until he enlisted in the National Guard at the age of 18. Upon his enlistment, Chebby was shipped to fight in the Korea War out of Seattle, Washington on the US Marine Phoenix. His first day in Korea his company was overrun by North Korean and Chinese soldiers at the 32nd Parallel while they were retrieving a .50 caliber machine gun from a mountain. The rest his time spent in Korea was as Demolitions Engineer disarming bombs, retrieving landmines, fixing bridges, and clearing roads. Chebby was grateful and gave God thanks for making it back home safely. For his service, Chebby was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. When he returned, he met Sulema Suniga. They married on June 27, 1955. They spent their honeymoon in the mountains of Phoenix, Arizona and started a family soon after. Over the next 63 years they had six children and there was never a dull moment. Chebby worked over the years as a pressman, salesman, radio personality, advertiser, dance promoter, and always worked hard with his wife, Sulema, to support and provide for their family. He loved music, especially as he spent time in Lamesa promoting Chicano classics and Tejano music. Together with his wife, they enjoyed watching baseball, basketball, and football games. They also loved spending time with their family. Above all, Chebby trusted in God for all of the blessings he received in life.
